National Nutrition Month

Foods we choose can make a difference! Every March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics embarks on its annual campaign to increase education about healthy eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme is a HOME RUN as it hits directly on the concept that WholeHearted was founded on...the idea that we can go further with food.

Let me repeat that. GO FURTHER WITH FOOD. Incredibly simple statement...incredibly powerful idea.

Our relationships with food are often tumultuous and if your relationships have been anything like mine...they're probably filled with self judgement. When are we going to stop positioning food as our “frenemy” and start embracing it as a great and necessary resource to obtain health.

In the spirit of the National Nutrition Month, let’s take a peek at some integration ideas to increase health (adapted from

  1. Don’t discriminate! Include a variety of foods from all food groups on a regular basis. This should include lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

  2. When grocery shopping, buy the perishable foods that you can use or freeze within a few days to save on food waste. Plan ways to use leftovers. Anyone love SOUP?

  3. Take inventory of your fridge and pantry prior to leaving for the grocery store. Throw away the foods that are expired and look at the ingredients that you have in stock to begin to experiment with new recipes. Some of my go-to’s for meal ideas based on ingredients are or

  4. Be mindful of portion sizes and hunger cues. Eat and drink the amount that is right for you. Eating until fullness is crucial in intuitive eating. Be wary of the dreaded over eat.

  5. Use food safety practices when heating, cooling, and storing foods properly to ensure you and your family avoid food-borne illnesses and foods stay fresh and safe for consumption.
